A post-doctoral position is available in the laboratory of Clinton Mathias at the University of Connecticut, Storrs. We are seeking to recruit a highly motivated and skilled postdoctoral research associate to study the role of mast cells in the development of food allergy. The focus areas of the lab include mechanisms governing the homeostasis and activation of mast cells during allergic responses. The primary project involves investigation of the role of IL-10 in mast cell-mediated responses during food allergy. However opportunities to participate in other projects will also be available. These include the examination of various endogenous and environmental factors that control mast cell activation during allergic responses.
The successful candidate will join a highly collaborative team within the Department of Nutritional Sciences. The University of Connecticut is home to world-class biomedical research facilities and is ranked as the #1 public university in New England and in the top 25 public universities in the US. The Department of Nutritional Sciences, ranked in the top 7 among 96 similar programs in the US, oversees an active undergraduate and graduate research program, accompanied by journal clubs, research seminars by faculty, students, and renowned scientists, as well as joint research lab meetings. Departmental faculty work on several collaborative projects investigating the molecular and immunological basis of diseases such as metabolic syndrome, obesity, and food allergy. We are also part of a vibrant research community on campus, with several faculty collaborating with investigators across UConn, and participating in joint seminars with faculty from the School of Pharmacy and the School of Medicine at UConn Health.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsibilities include data collection, analysis, manuscript preparation, and presentation of data at regional and national meetings. The incumbent will also participate in the supervision and training of students, technicians, and other laboratory personnel. Additionally, the incumbent will join and actively participate in seminars and research meetings. The ideal candidate is expected to have a strong background in immunology and biochemistry and will be required to work with both mouse models and tissue cultures.
- Ph.D. degree in immunology or a closely related field.
- Experience working with mice and knowledge of molecular, cellular, and immunological techniques.
- Good writing and communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to multi-task and meet multiple deadlines.
- Attention to detail, organization, hard-working, a commitment to laboratory research, able to work both independently as well as in a team environment.
- The ideal candidate should have a strong track record, be highly driven and creative, and have a passion for studying immunology.
- Laboratory research experience in immunology is preferred, with additional background knowledge of biochemistry and molecular biology.
- The candidate will ideally have extensive experience with in vivo animal models of immunological disease, multiparameter flow cytometry, in vitro cell culture assays, and other immunological, molecular, and cellular techniques.
- The ideal candidate is expected to have a proven academic publication track record, including first-authored publications, and should have outstanding scientific writing and communication skills.
